“War and Peace.” A tome. A slog. The sort of book you shouldn’t read in bed because if you fall asleep it could give you a concussion. Right? Only partly. “War and Peace” is a long book, sure, but it’s also a thrilling examination of history populated with some of the deepest, most realistic characters you’ll find anywhere. Brendan Pelsue shares everything you need to know to read this classic book.

Correction: The Decembrists revolted against the conservative Tsar Nicholas I in 1825, not Tsar Nicholas II.
russian novelists take forever to cover anything, because they give insights into the psychological parameters of the thoughts of individuals…that Never Ever Happen…nobody actually thinks the way these people think; it is all about How They Should Be Thinking…as such, most of this stuff is pure BS….the author's ego on full display…
спасибо.

I had read War and Peace in 14 years. It was pile of books, but I was interested in it. Now I earn money by writing, thanks for our classics
One piece be like
Publisher: How many pages you want to write? Tolstoy: Yes.. i cannot describe how much i LOVE russian literature.
No rusia, Ukraine will destroy that piece of shame what names "rusian literature" Glory To Ukraine!
I read it in about 3 weeks. Worth it
Why should I read Tolstoy's "War and Peace"? To know exactly how much Russian literature is boring and overrated.
What is the name of the background music?
By any means if this bookcan be reduced to some 200 pages and if it can be translated in many global languages not only a big marketing but many will understand things in their own language
I HAVE READ IT
but I do not take kindly to ANYONE who says I OUGHT TO read anything
I invite you to keep your endorsements to the level of enthusiastic recommendations and NOT present them imperative demands
One of the really great novels. I haven't read it in Russian, but have read it in French and English. I suggest people also read Anna Karenin and Resurrection.
I'll take a gander, see where it leads.
There are main characters in war and peace
Good thing i didn't get with neamat would have been awful with the beliefs i had in my head listened tk these guys. You don't need therapy if yout beliefs are what is making you depressed
Sir I am a reader and I love to read novels in my free time so i want you to make videos on books like this as i am very much interested in books. Thank you.
i’ve visited Tolstoy’s grave in Russia. I was shocked that one of the greatest writers was so modestly buried!! without a tombstone. check photos on the internet
Natasha and Andrey’s love story got me hooked to the book when I was 16, but at 29 I relate to Pierre the most
Does anyone know the background tune?
Imagine my bliss when, in the 9th grade, during the holidays before studying the novel, I read it before studying it.
AND ANDREY ISN'T HERE-
I did not understand anything
3:55 Суть этого сочинения!!
Can someone please let me know the name of the song that is playing in the background of this video? It would be a perfect reading soundtrack.
Don't let this video trick you into wasting your money.
It's just a boring soap opera with the most one dimensional and status obsessed characters.
Some of them are alright but you'd maybe like 12 out of the circa 1200 pages.
I only sympathized with the one who only went to war so that he could die and be free of the boring life he had.
It never gets deep into the war mentality and the cunning kind pulling the string.
This book sucks. I repeat… this book SUCKS.
Oh btw, I didn't read it I watched the 2016 bbc series which is supposedly the easy way of "reading the book" because you aren't reading it and the visuals are spoon feeding the story to you yet it still failed to be interesting with how it plays the aristocrat blues.
I was rooting for Napoleon the whole time and he barely made the story.
Pfft!
Isn't it ironic that we're watching videos about reading books?
new
I still didn't get why I should care to read it
There is nothing we can do
I think you shouldn't be afraid of a long book. If you don't like it, you shouldn't be reading it and if you do like it, there will be many days of enjoyment (many more than a normal size novel)
– this audio falls into a loop. Don't bother
I remember reading this when I was 15, took me almost 3 months to finish it. I remember it as the story of several couples and their tragedies and triumphs. I think I'm going to read it again.
This book is anything but a slog.
my goal for 2024! Cant wait!
I read War and Peace slowly over 18 months, it was easier that way. It is my favorite book I have ever read, to this day. It is profound, the characters are rich, but most importantly it made me think about politics and philosophy more than I have ever thought before. It is a masterpiece.
Love
Annoying backgorund music why???
You should read War and Peace because it helps you to understand “Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812”
I didn’t like Prince Andrey at first. I now find him tolerable.
It’s a page turner—the length only makes me wish there were more.
Names bother you? Refer to a chart of characters…
If you respect literature and like to read a expert analogy of Russian culture and way of living during the Napoleonic Wars, this is the best book! I was raised on this book, literally read it the first time when I was 16 years old, since then I've read it 10 times! It never gets old, the reading experience, only better, because you've formed a relationship with characters during previous reads, know who they are, and the later reads just make it better, like watching some movie in the top ten best films. Highly suggest reading it.
I'm reading War and Peace right now, and loving it. The quality of the writing, the characters, the dialogue, the historical sweep which dovetail perfectly with the detailed personal lives of so many fascinating characters….. I've read many classics but for my part, this is looking like the perfect novel.
Yes, it's a big read, but once you've engaged with it then you don't want it to end – it's not a mere novel, it's a journey, multiple journeys, a morality tale, a mixture of fascinating tales of love, war and tragedy…..while you're reading this book, you constantly gasp at this author's genius…. Highly recommended
War IS Peace…
That sounds like he had major ADHD and can't focus.
Most of his novel was written in French as aristocrats spoke that language predominantly. Editors asked him to translate it into Russian as many people didn't know how speak French.
Why? Just to save time to not see this video.
A Russian colleague told me that the title should be translated as
''The War and the World'' instead of ''War and Peace''.
"Some people can read War and Peace and come away thinking it's a simple adventure story, others can read the ingredients on a Chewing Gum Wrapper and unlock the secrets of the universe."
-Lex Luthor
W a i t
What war and peace did i get MINE IS SO SMALL
Man i love books i like reading heck i have read whole encyclopedia sets when i was 6yo in 3 days. But it's freaking intimidating when ONE books is that thick
I’m now in my second read through, and I have yet to find a character named Warren Peace. What a confusing book!
Please stop with the God damn vocal fry
I’ll stick with the movie 1968 version.
1:40 nicolas the first, actually 🙂
I got 400 pages left and im sad theres only 400 pages left
Anyone know the song in the video?!
You are doing great job. I think we should discourage the war. In the war there are no winners. Even one party win without any damage to them, they also losers because they have destroyed properties and human lives in other party. That make them losers as human.
Honestly war and peace isnt that hard to read. Although daunting, i read it at 13 and enjoyed it greatly so id recommend at least starting it
nice
2:52 just watch The Great Comet. It’s the same story!
I read war and peace in high school in six days. The book seemed quite interesting at that time, because I was used to reading religious epics before that. It left a deep impression on me and moulded my personality a bit. My favourite character is Count Bezhukov. Now I am 32 and will read it again and other works of Tolstoy too. Also have the goals of reading up Dostovesky, an unparalleled genius.
Read it for the first time this year and loved it. Sofya did a great job lol
Родина is one of my favorite Russian music samples. I miss listening to it. Nice choice.
I'm gonna read this massive book today. I'll come back after I finish it
War & Peace is a must read. A foundational book to understanding Elites, War, Money, and the people.
I did it and it was NOT worth it.
Watching this video because I am planning to read War and Peace
volume was quite loud on the music, for the editor
In Russian "peace" (мир) write similarly as "world" (мир) , so a lot of Russians thinks Lev Tolstoi named his book : "War and World" , but jn forst redaction in until-reformian Russian was 2 words : peace – Миръ and world – міръ , and autor calls his book :Война и міръ ,which means war and peace , but anothr autor Alexander Mayakovski wrote his own book with name :Война и міръ , and in people memoris this two books becomes one .
P.s be honest it was very hard to wrote this text , becouse im not native eng speaker but if someone read it , спасибо тебе большое
The background music is very annoying.
I would never have considered reading "Warren Piece" if not for this 5 minute TED-Ed cartoon
Kings are the slaves of History ❤
My suggestion, if you intend to read it only once, is to learn all the names of the main characters before you start. Everyone has several names, eg, proper, official, familiar, nicknames, pet names, etc. I would find myself reading about a character for some time before I realized it was someone I'd already been introduced to. After finishing the book the first time, I immediately started reading it a second time, because now I knew everyone, and enjoyed it even more. Also, if you're reading an English translation, they are not all created equal.. in my opinion. For instance, Constance Garnett is good, but feels very Anglicized. My favorites are Maude, Briggs, and Pevear & Volokhonsky, in that order. This book will profoundly change how you see yourself, humanity, and the world. Also, each time you read it, there will be new lessons and revelations that you didn't notice in previous readings.
1:36 quick correction: Nicholas II wasnt even born in 1825. I think you meant Nicholas I
You should read War and Peace because it's a great story. All the other stuff is a bonus that makes it the greatest novel of all time.
Porque soy una Rostov
You should not. Trust me. I was made to do it at 16 y.o. in school.

Additionally it would be handy to know about what drives the Catholics counter reformers, Jesuits. The Illuminatis and secret societys . Infiltration and spies and lies . Every book should be measured against the message of the Bible truths . Digesting war history and philosophy without religious parallell history, and even occult history, is pointless (occultism is practically paganism, or rather gnostic, that is a fusion of paganism and christianity) . Is he a lefty is he a right wing, is also pointless, for what are his methods, is he corrupt, cheating and lying, or honest, forgiving and mercyful, everyone whould know what is preferrable . Is he a beliver in Jesus or an opponent, thats what counts .
I think a good anti war novel and works would be “the war with Mexico reviewed” by Abiel Livermore from the American Peace Society, describes one of the darkest wars and events in the early 19th century, the war between two Christian nations, and with unfiltered depictions and first hand accounts, reviews the war with Mexico and utilizes his arguments to prevent other nations from committing similar calamitous and fruitless wars. A lot of historical references and quotes including Shakespeare and edwards gibbons decline of the Roman empire, recommended read on anti war efforts
I've tried twice. Couldn't get there. I do, however, absolutely ADORE Anna Karenina.
does war leads to peace? well as i think of it, War is kind of a bit more on defending and invading to me, but it could be possible right?
A book everyone should read in their lifetime.
Iwant to writing it pleasssssssssssssssse
Iwant to write it pleassssse
Yapathon if it was a book
I have read War & Peace thrice. Once in school, once in college and then after college. Every time I felt I understood the characters better. First time, I was only interested about knowing how Andrei-Natasha-Pierre's love story evolves. The second time I was more interested in learning about Russian society and the contemporary history of that time. And the last time, I truly appreciated Tolstoy's writing style and understood why it is the greatest novel of all times.
. If Tolstoy had studied and understood Spinoza’s philosophy communicated in his Ethics, Tolstoy would have found what his inner being required, which is, a deeper understanding of the nature of God, the mind, and of human freedom.
The background noise is annoying and childish. Your presentation sucks.
Question to Tolstoy, Did you have to spend a whole page describing a tree??? A TREE??
