Want to know how much storage to get for your MacBook? Having to replace a perfectly good laptop because it doesn’t have enough internal storage is horrible. You have a machine that does everything you need – it’s fast enough, powerful enough, has a great display, keyboard and trackpad – and the only issue is that you’re constantly running out of space. If you’re buying a new MacBook Air or MacBook Pro the internal storage is not upgradable – so how much storage do you actually need? what’s going to be enough for what you plan on doing? And what are the best ways to save money on storage? Today we’re going to talk about these questions, look at several different use-cases and I’ll help you choose the right amount of storage for your #apple #macbookair and #macbookpro

You have a great point here. I’m currently on 25gb of 256gb on my iPad 12.9 M1. I am a professional musician so have thousands of music pdfs that I use in concerts and rehearsals…. Thankfully PDFS don’t take up that much room. If I was editing video professionally then yes it would be a different story. I know nothing about video production so that’s ok. Most of my files are on my iCloud, Google and Dropbox. I also have a Network Access Storage 2tb drive so very little is stored just on my iPad. Even my photos are just and only on my iPhone.
That’s just my experience with my iPad. A Mac or iMac however is the opposite. I’d go super large HDD capacity in that scenario too.
So clear and simple!

can i use samsung external ssd through usb type c with macbook air?
~256gb is sufficient for very light users: Think word docs, pdf docs, excel docs, a small music library, and a few hundred photos.
~512gb is sufficient for your standard user: Think some movies, a few thousand photos, a larger music library, some projects files and enough room for larger applications.
~1tb is sufficient for your pro user: Think working on larger professional projects with the ability to store some of their files ~~With the storage capability for windows bootcamp.
~2tb + is sufficient for high end / specialist users: Think having to store 4tb of raw video files shot on a 2 day commercial.
My recommendation for most users is to at the very least get 512gb and if you can afford it get 1tb. It's always better to future proof your computer with a little bit more storage even if you don't think you need it now.
Good perspective. Thanks
If I use Microsoft OneDrive (1TB of storage), will it impact the 256gb storage for MBA or MBP? Right now on my PC, the OneDrive app is only 217MB (mostly excel files and some photos backed up) but just want to make sure.
my plan was to do 256gb and add a 5tb external hard drive and just upgrade to 16gb. will this work for video editing?
What do I need if I only use to stream movies, check email, and save pictures/back up my phone (I’m a mom so I prob have over 20k on my old laptop)
שגיא המלך!
You need at least 512gb and 16gb of memory
I'm buying one of these for university. I only need it for that, and maybe a bit of Logic Pro. Is the 256 GB enough? Any advice and help is appriciated!
It's a great laptop. I think it's the best out there. It does have Dolby atmos. The sound you can here all around you. Very happy with it.
Yup, I bought the 256GB not thinking about it and now I’m wanting to get a 1tb Pro, just so I don’t have to worry about storage again
you are amazing!
Great information
Omgassshhh!!! Thank you for making this video! I got more clearer explanation from you than the ones who sells it! Okay im buying one now!!
Hope apple will upgrade the storage base model from 256gb to 512gb.
Us , apple’s customers need to teach Apple a lesson . They soldered the ssd on the motherboard . We should not buy any apple product for a full year ! Let s see them executives shit their pants for 0 profit over the course of a year . I went to a repair shop and he said if the ssd breaks and it isn t in warranty anymore it ll be a really hefty sum because they’ll change the whole motherboard . ?!?!? WHAT ?!?!? The whole motherboard for just one part that s broken ?! Hellooooooo ?
macBook air 16gb ram and get an usb adapter and a external disk of 1tb… deal done… end of story…
How to clean “the other” ?
Is the video on comparing external storage posted yet?
I'm a realtor and planning to have a Macbook where I can store images, videos, presentations, documents and other data regarding my property listings. I would like to have sort of an archive of my listings that I can access immediately and not being dependent on an external drive or Wi-Fi. I would sometimes do some really light photo or video editing (cropping videos or correcting images), some presentations on Keynote, maybe use some CRM online system and rarely viewing some .dwg files.
Do you guys think a Macbook Air with 8gb RAM and 1TB would work for this? Or should I get the 16gb RAM? I would like my Macbook to run smoothly for a few years.
Also consider this: it's recommended to keep 10-15% of total ssd capacity free, because of data swap and if you fully occupy ssd space, the system is likely to slow down because of that.
i spent ages finding an ipad with 256gb for a decent price. it was refurbished and in "fair" condition according to the site. bought it, was doing a bit more searching after purchasing and found this site i had never seen before, and there was this exact same ipad model. it was £7 more, but for 512gb and in "very good" condition. i was so annoyed, i cancelled the other order and bought the 512 gig one instead. so happy I've got it. it arrived in 2 days, was completely legitimate looks great
BUY IT NICE BABY
Firstly, absolutely love your presentaton style. One of the most clear and concise reviews I've seen in a long time.
Currently righting this from my new MBA base model but fretting if it was a mistake to not get the 512gb. I fall into the first category of webbased app use in Marketing. I have a primary machine but wondering if maybe I'd like to use this for light photo editing one day.
Also is the story of using less then 80% of your SSD true?
what if i am going to be making/editing videos and playing games on the air what sdd do u recommend?
Folks.. Spend your extra amount on ram instead of storage. You can add storage, but you'll stuck with ram, you can't upgrade ram.
Hey, thanks for the great video. Quick question, why are the closed captions are showing totally different than the video contents?
Men! Which program do you use to edit and export your videos? Let me explain, sometimes my internet speed fails and I have to watch videos in 480p, and I noticed that even on 480p your videos look SO SHARP. I usually watch 1440p content but this time I could stay watching your content in 1080p or even 720p without compromising much. Great!
even tho i did buy one, these are an effing scam. its insulting to put only 256gb in such an expensive laptop
Hi I'd like to know if a portable external Sandisk hard disk would be compatible with the macbook air, or does it only work with an external ssd?
My 64gb iphone and 64gb ipad isnt even half full. I guess 256 enough for me lol.
I plan to buy an M2 MacBook Air and I plan to use it for at most 10 years. in these 10 years I might do video editing, so will 500gb be enough?
I am considering buying the 256gb MBP. I am going to keep around 3 to 4 games on it at all times. I want to know how much storage space do games require on mac on an average. Also, what is the largest app you can find on the mac app store?
Nice! Gonna get the 512gb version, i have a 1TB WD Passport and 200gb iCloud storage so im good to go.
great video! the only version available for the mac air m1 is the 256GB, would you think that’s enough for a designer that mainly uses adobe programs (illustrator, photoshop etc)? also, are those softwares compatible and easy to run?
What if you have an external 2tb external drive. Is 256 enough as a graphic designer
I purchased a Mac in 2019 with 128GB… I only use it to browse the web and school. Due to software updates and Apps. I don’t have enough storage to do anything else. I wish I knew this before my purchase. I now have to buy it twice
getting my first ever Macbook M1, but which one should i get: M1 Macbook Air with 16gb ram or the base model of M1 Macbook air with 8gb ram?
Im going to use it for school….word, excel, powerpoint, Discord, browsing, Netflix and youtube and i would like to be able to use it for 3-5 years.
If you recommend 512GB for a MacBook, would you also recommend 512GB for an iPad Pro? Maybe iPad apps use less storage than a Mac? Also, iPads don’t support multiple users so does that matter? Thanks!
Is 16GB of RAM and 256gb ssd, I’ve got an external 1TB SSD okay
And when you are a programmer and like installing a dual boot system for Windows and you like to play games, you will find 256GB was nice back in 2008.
Is 256 is enough if your just using it to online class, watching yt and Netflix?
Do you think the base model MacBook Air will be enough for me? I will be an incoming college freshman who will mostly be using my laptop for writing essays, doing assignments, zooms, and streaming. I’m not planning on doing any photo/video editing or downloading too much other than maybe some word documents.
Wouldn't an external hard drive work?
The subtitles are going crazy
Best M1 Air variant for your video editing in 2022 ??
The questions is how much free storage you at the first start of 256gb MBA m1?
I am not able to download Logic Pro it shows "connect to the power source and even then it is connected to internet it says connect to the network please help me
Wouldn't a company labeling a product as say 256GB when the storage is clearly 251GB illegal?. That's false advertisement and there has to be consumer laws being broken here.

How many movies can l download on a 256gb of storage??
Have about 200 or 250 GB of music (was on my older MacBook Pro ; just got M2 MacBook Air with 1 TB (16 GB RAM). Have not yet calculated the amount of photo library. Wondering if I should switch to the 2 TB ?
what not use external storage or dual boot?
Great advice and well explained. Thank you.
2 tb ssd, 200ish$.
Apple. 800…..
I just bought the 512GB M1 a few days ago, I am using it for office work and backing up my phone, as well as my personal finances/taxes. No doing any video work and I use iCloud for photos as well as DropBox and MS cloud for documents. I never download movies, as for games I’m going to be using my AppleTV 4K 3rd Generation with 128GB (once I get that) for Apple Arcade.
I’ve had my base MacBook Air m1 for a year now and still have 130gb available. I only have GarageBand loaded and about 6-8 blue Ray movies downloaded on Apple TV.
I figured for $200 for double the storage.. I’d just buy a nice external ssd down the line if I needed it as I never use the second thunderbolt port anyways.
Hi I just bought my MacBook Air M1 on Black Friday, I plan on doing more Photoshop, Illustrator and LightRoom for my Photography which was a huge problem for my old HP Laptop. I need a specific list of the portable external hard drive that I can buy that are affordable and will free up some storage space on my laptop. Do you have any solution?
Can you tell me.. which Laptop is better for Day Trading.. is it Mac or Window laptop? How much SSD & RAM memory is enough?
In the process of upgrading my laptop. Still debating if I should get a 1tb-2tb internal storage M1 or just play off an SSD. My only issue is if I chose SSD then I would need two one for gigs and the other as a backup which is time consuming to duplicate files on both.
So I’ve been on a hunt for weeks now trying to figure out what’s the best laptop for me to get. I want to get my first MacBook, but I’ve been struggling on what to get when it comes to SSD. I’m going back to school for coding/software programming And they currently have good deals for the 14 inch MacBook pros 512 SSD for $1600. Add 1 TB for $2000. Can anyone tell me what would be my best bet? I’m not a ‘baller’ but I am willing to sacrifice for I am seeing this as a investment. I’m also not a fan of external storage, but I am open to listen to Opinions
Very nice video and very helpful, but i have a question, i am a app developer student would i be able to do Photoshop video editing and game development and store them in an external ssd with the 256gb macbook air or i need the 512gb version?
Cool ! An excellent explanation of the subject!!! Laszlo Montreal Photog.
What would be a better option? will there be any difference in performance? Macbook Air M1 16gb 512gb or 256gb and external 1tb samsung ssd drive (which i already have)?
I'm a college student, Not a gamer, just college works and stuff. I Don't usually download stuff and all like movies and stuff, mostly download them on an external HD, Is 256gb ssd M2 Air more than enough for me ? I wont be working on photo or video files as well. Is it enough to operate AutoCAD SOFTWARE ?
Mac book air m1 8gb/256 ….is that okay for software debugging testing and automation?
I am a very poor guy who aspire to own a Macbook but can't really afford to spend much into it. My primary requirement remains light photo editing, small-scale designing using Photoshop or likes and some 3-10 minutes of HD/FHD video editing tasks. Will a Macbook Air M1 having 8GB/256GB be sufficient enough or do I need Macbook Air M2 or 14" Macbook Pro for the same?
256GB as base model must be a sin in 2023.
There are so many types of use between "just browsing the internet" and "hardcore image editing that will burn your eyes out". I find it really unhelpful when these are the only types of computer usage mentioned in these type of videos. Of course the base model will fit a person who barely uses their notebook. That is obvious, unhelpful and yet repeated on almost every single video while other types of usage don't even get mentioned.
Thanks for presenting more possibilities!
I can't store my entire homework folder in 256gb
1 TB, just save some money and go with the 1 TB, if you r planning to use it for next 5-6 years. You can replace the battery after 3 years but not the storage. From my previous experience, never go with 256 GB, skip 512GB, 1TB is the only option you should buy.
Hello , recently i bought macbook air M2 256 GB base model… Can anyone tell me is it enough for university student for 5 yrs. ?
Bla bla bla, You need 2TB but it's too expensive. That's it. Less than that you are a light user and probably should have a MacBook Air.
Apple should not be selling laptops with anything lower than 512gb. Then again they shouldn't be making computer with non-removable storage because when the drive is done so is the laptop.
Im graphic designer my macbook storage 512 i dont play games or work with large files, i download movies time to time and i plan to keep it for 5 years did i make the right decision ?
If i plan to use my laptop for 10yrs, will the 256gb enough?
Bite the bullet…get 1TB SSD.
This a very practical accessment of what you need in a HD. Most people don't realize that you can do with a much smaller internal drive if you keep your files on an external drive and/or cloud storage – and then just keep your apps on your internal drive. Thanks for pointing that out – and potentially saving people a lot of money.
Im a 9th grade student i do programming in java,c++ and a lil bit video editing and play games like genshin impact, is the 8gb/512gb model good for me? As i cant purchase the 16gb ram 1tb storage varient cuz its way too costly for me
I need a little advice, I'm very confused about choosing a MacBook Pro M1 Pro 16" with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD or M2 Pro 14" with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD, what should I buy?
Is it worth to upgrade the storage from 1TB to 2TB or just get an external disk?
What about vst virtual instruments? Or plug-in
0:50 I can't believe you stated this
I think people are aware by now when you buy storage you don't get to use all of it. (less 20MB after partitioned) or so
Also, remember you can get a better deal when you use Apple-Trade in, or buy from the Apple's Refurbished Store (roughly $100 off). or maybe more with trade in, and may just be the major different between forking out for that 512 gig.
Basic stuff is 256Gig, and many will say 256Gig isn't enough and to "future proof", or use the "can't upgrade" slogan… All are true, but that's THEIR view… Your the one who using it, not them.
Am lookin to buy my first labtop and need advice on labtop ty fir the info. 256gb should be i dont kn?
256? not enough
I want to install anaconda+flutter dev+ mern stack with devops and system design and lastly java development……Is 256gb enough bcz i want to store my projects on external ssd
The fact that ssd is soldered to the board doesn't mean it's irreplaceable. It CAN be upgraded, it just takes more effort than you'd want to
Do you think 256 gb enough for students?
Mainly google docs drive… and editing photos but not editing on regular basis
I got 512 and I’m consider make a downgrade because I think that is a lot. Should I keep it?
